Andrew Yang calling NYC power players to gauge mayoral run
POLITICO
From political unknown to presidential candidate folk hero but is Yang ready for the biggest version of small-town politics? More specifically, can someone with very high name value convince New Yorkers that they’d like to entrust someone without city government experience to the revival of a city reeling from COVID?
Or is it as simple as… anyone but De Blasio?

First time I saw Sum 41 live was at the 2003 Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto concert (AKA the SARS Benefit Concert). Sum 41 and coronaviruses seem awfully friendly. - MIKE
Ever seen them in the same place at the same time?

I was so surprised today when I opened my Free Political Newsletter that there was not email after email touting the poignant lyrics from They Might Be Giants' Classic Album John Henry (the first to have a "complete" band). End of the Tour might be the best song to end an album. Also, I have always thought of you when I hear Extra Savoir Faire.
So to not just make this email about my love for the Johns, here some stats from the Specialty Foods distributor I work for in Ohio. As you can see we increased our sales to our largest customer over ten percent, but if you don't think the Restaurant Industry is going to crater after NYE you're kidding yourself. There will not be enough runway to a vaccine.
Total Sales week of December 1st, 2019 = $259,877.87 Grocery Store Chain = $45,614.85
Total Sales week of November 29th, 2020 = $144,655.08 Grocery Store Chain = $50,309.56 - CHRISTOPHER
Well, I have to hand it to you Chris. This email sure had range.
I very much worry for restaurants and bars. They are slim margin businesses and the ones that have stayed open to this point are a miracle. Unless local regulations continue to give them some kind of relief (which might include outdoor dining) I don’t know what the landscape looks like in ‘21.

We didn't get these in Ohio. When my kids needed to be tested, there was no drive thru instant response. We went to a lab. They swabbed us in the parking lot. We waited 2-6 days for the results. By the time they came back positive, everyone else in the house was already sick and we knew what was going on.
If we can make a test as easy to use as a pregnancy test, we could all test daily and self-quarantine whenever it became positive.
especially since the vaccine reeks of "I am Legend" :/ - CHAD
3 of my 4 tests were sent to a lab. The results ranged from 3-6 days. There is one rapid test place in my neighborhood. I got that result in 15 minutes.

How is Hawley tying the break-up of big tech to personal checks? That seems like a reach. - SEAN W
The president is tying 230 to national defense, so the rules are a bit skewed at the moment.

Hawley is a dick. - PAYNE
Man, you know people hate you when you get called a dick in the process of trying to cut $1200 checks to everyone.

I've given you a bit of a hard time since the election re: your "I don't really know that there's much value in taking a bunch of fuzzy numbers and adding them together" take on 538 and the like. I still think you're a bit wrong there, BUT....
Just so happens I was listening to the 538 podcast today and they interviewed the famous Iowa pollster Ann Selzer, who is widely regarded as one of the best in the business. She had some very interesting things to say about polling methods... some things that sounded very similar to a certain political pundit's "stop over complicating things" take.
Anyway... if you're still interested in doing more interviews about polling, where it's gone wrong, and where it can do better, you should try to talk to Ann Selzer. I think you'd really enjoy the conversation, and there's few working pollsters out there who have a better track record than she does. - MATT
I loved that interview. She’s great. I need to get her on.
That being said, it might be the last FiveThirtyEight podcast I listen to. Why? They fired my girl Clare! CLARE! How do you fire the only person with a pulse on your podcast? I got it when Harry Enten left, it was time for him to become his own Nate. But Clare?!
Insanity! Stupidity!
