Thom Tillis is out. He’s not going to run for reelection in North Carolina, and that changes the shape of the Senate map in a big way. Republicans had three realistic opportunities to flip seats — Georgia, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. Now they’ve lost all three. Kemp’s not running in Georgia. Sununu bowed out in New Hampshire. And now Tillis has decided it’s not worth the headache in North Carolina. That seat, which could’ve been a defensive hold, might flip blue with Roy Cooper likely entering the race. And the bench for Republicans in North Carolina? Let’s just say it’s weird and shallow. There’s only one name that really makes sense if you want someone who can claim a Trump lane and still put on a respectable face: Lara Trump.
