Todd Blanche says Trump doesn’t want yes-men, he isn’t a yes-man, and he won’t prosecute people on demand. I’d be curious to ask Americans what role they think a president should have in the Justice Department. The president appoints the attorney general, and most people probably expect political philosophy to turn the shining light of justice a little bit. Democrats might want more white-collar prosecutions; Republicans might want more prosecutions involving government fraud or elections. Where people get squirmy is when that turns into specific targets.
We’re living in an age of polarization, so Blanche’s answers will mean whatever people already want them to mean. If you’re inclined to take him at face value, he’ll do his best to remain independent. If you’re suspicious, he’s Pinocchio dancing for Papa Trump.
