For the fourth time in our nation's history the president will face a viable impeachment threat. Unlike his modern era predecessors Clinton and Nixon, Donald Trump will join Andrew Johnson as a president who faced such a threat in his first term.
Quick thoughts:
- It feels so weird that the Democrats would push ahead with a still-developing controversy not yet a week old and not obstruction from the Mueller report. It's like a friend who is dating someone for five years and they break up before they can get married. Then three months later he proposes to the first girl he dated on the rebound.
- The next steps are the release of the Ukraine call transcript from the White House and testimony of the whistleblower. Both of these have the capacity to massively shape public opinion.
- An impeachment challenge in a first term is obviously very, very rare. I get the sense that if this is successful in damaging Trump we will see much more of them. If it is unsuccessful and Trump sees a Clinton-esqe rallying this might be the last time in another 150 years we see this strategy.
Either way... IT'S ON!
