More War With Iran on the Way. Trump Heads to China. Redistricting Fight Rages On.

News breaking so fast, the Sunday shows couldn't even cover it.

The Trump administration spent the last few weeks signaling optimism that some kind of Iran deal was coming together, but the latest response from Tehran makes it look a lot more likely that we are heading back toward open conflict. The core dispute is still the same one it’s always been. The U.S. wants Iran’s nuclear material out of the country before any lasting ceasefire or sanctions relief. Iran wants a ceasefire first, negotiations second, and apparently still believes it should maintain leverage through the Strait of Hormuz. That’s not exactly the response you send if you think you’re on the verge of surrendering.

What makes this situation especially chaotic is that there no longer seems to be one coherent Iranian position. One side wants a deal badly enough to discuss transferring enriched uranium out of the country, which is a major concession compared to where things stood even a month ago. Another side appears determined to fire every remaining missile before giving anything up. That helps explain why negotiations can appear productive one day while Iranian forces are attacking ships the next.
