As Election Day approaches, the Cuomo fans in NYC are starting to feel a little more hopeful. I’ve been watching this race unfold and while I get why folks are excited, I think we all need to take a deep breath. Yes, early voting numbers are up dramatically in New York City. Yes, they’re surging in places that might benefit Cuomo. But just because people are voting more doesn’t mean they’re voting for him. Most signs — demographic, geographic, and polling — still point toward Mamdani. The margins are tightening, sure, but that doesn’t mean the trend has reversed.
That said, I do think this race is closer than it might look on paper. Cuomo’s name recognition alone carries real weight, and the fact that some Republicans are willing to hold their nose and vote for him — even after everything that happened during COVID and beyond — is a testament to how unusual this race is. Still, the turnout’s coming strongest from Mamdani-friendly areas. I’ve got to go with what the numbers and behavior are telling me, and right now, they’re not screaming a win for Cuomo.
