The Shutdown Standoff
Chuck Schumer says this doesn’t bother him — the Democrats are unified. They believe they need to shut down the government because of Donald Trump’s lawless, blank-check administration. That’s the line. But what’s strange is how unsure they sound in owning the move. Democrats don’t do shutdowns. That’s usually a Republican tool. Yet they also insist they won’t be blamed. That contradiction says a lot. You can’t claim you’re not at fault while also pushing the button.
I think Schumer is saying what he has to, but the people forcing this aren’t at the top. It’s the folks just below — like Chris Van Hollen — who see an opportunity to move up. Hakeem Jeffries too. Neither of them want to look weak. Van Hollen especially is trying to build the case that Schumer is too soft. He was livid the last time Schumer didn’t pull the trigger. Now he wants him to. This isn’t about policy — it’s about job openings.
