Donald Trump made reference to Arnold Palmer during his rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania over the weekend. He said the following:
"This man was strong and tough, and I refuse to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, 'Oh my God, that's unbelievable.'"
This created a news cycle about Arnold Palmer’s penis.
Light hearted jokes about “stroke game” and “big wood,” sure. But also a darker conversation: Is this a sign that Donald Trump is in mental decline?
Donald Trump, a man who once told a story about yacht orgies to a Boy Scout Jamboree, would never make mention a well-hung golf legend unless dementia had taken root.
Oh wait, that’s exactly the kind of quotable that gets media attention and reminds low-propensity voters that Donald Trump is not a normal politician. It’s entirely within his bombastic brand and dare I say enjoyable to the vast majority of Americans who are unaffiliated with a political party and enjoy humorous references to penises.
Sarcasm aside, this highlights a risky strategy being employed by the Kamala Harris campaign in the final weeks. To prove that Donald Trump is “unhinged” they are asking voters to pay more attention to him. For example, Harris now plays clips of him at her rallies.
The strategy is easy to understand. Kamala Harris is 18 years younger than Trump, she leads on the questions of who is most physically fit to serve.
And yet… it’s another bet that when the public gets to see more of Trump they will turn against him and polling increasingly shows that more of America thinks Trump is a safe alternative to the current administration.
